83 Days left and I need to warn you in advance today's blog is a hot topic. Read at your own risk you may find yourself fired up by the end. But it needs to be blogged and today is the day!

Jack Harkness...John Barrowman...today we're gonna discuss the Jack Harkness look. His clothes, his hair, his general Barrow-ness that makes him, well, HOT! See what I did there? Hot topic? Oh you guys thought I was going to be serious today, admit it!

Today I went shopping, which got me thinking about clothes and then as my mind generally does it related it back to Barrowman. I got to thinking about the fabulous look that has come to be our Captain's signature. I think we can all agree that the go-to outfit consists of the following: Dark trousers, blue shirt (light or dark), braces & a belt, THE COAT and the occasional waistcoat if Jack's feeling showy.  What we end up with is something like this...

I bet the majority of you are quite fond of this look, I mean...he looks good right? Not only does it suit our dear Mr. Barrowman but it's very fitting to the character and over 3 series, with very little deviation, we've gotten used to it.

But as accustomed as we are, the fact remains he's not a cartoon character, this is not his only outfit and he has worn other things in this role.  Through Doctor Who certainly he was not so constant in his attire and there were rare moments of differentiation in Torchwood as well. Here's a few examples:

From top to bottom we have, very different Jack from the Doctor Who days, that AWFUL jacket he occasionally wore in early Torchwood, waistcoat Jack, and my absolute favorite sea-foam green shirt/red braces Jack. That outfit is actually very debated amongst fans, you either hate it or love it. I personally was thrilled to have the change, it gave me the same exciting this is wrong feeling as Ianto in jeans!

My point, and I do have one, is that Jack is capable of change. He can switch up the outfits, he does cut and style his hair, and dare I say it, he even ages (very slowly). So what I am wondering about is the decision to keep him almost entirely the same throughout Torchwood. I get the practical reasons, I do. Save money on wardrobe changes (although as I understand it they have a number of copies of the coat), it's an iconic look and one associated with the character, what wearing a uniform of sorts represents for the Jack, and of course, because he looks great in it! I mean really why fix what's not broken?

And yet, I like the idea that a character changes and it's reflected outwardly. I think they did a bang up job in transition from Doctor Who to Torchwood to show us, visually, Jack has changed and matured quite a bit. I guess what I wished is that there would be some similar shake-up, if not so dramatic, to indicate Jack has really been through a lot and he has changed. I mean, wouldn't COE have fundamentally changed Jack at least to the point where he switched his shirt? No. Don't answer that, I actually have that topic on my "to blog" list. This is getting off topic and to be fair, he DOES have a new haircut in Miracle Day!

Before I stop my ramble I have something to confess. I am just gonna lay it out there. And you can tear into me as need be, but please do not misjudge my next statement.

I think Jack looks better without the coat.

I LOVE THE COAT and I would never get rid of it, but he could get hot in LA and take it off on occasion. I am a sucker for those braces. And if we're talking about preferences, I really wish we had series 2 Jack happening, his hair was the perfect length.

Time to shut up and hear from you. Do you have a favorite look Jack has donned? Do you like his hair long or short? Should I just shut up about messing with that level of perfection? xx

Favourite look: Waistcoat Jack. Favourite hair: horny porcupine ;-)

I mean, I love the slicked back 40's style in The Empty Child/Doctor Dances, but the spikier TW hair is certainly much better than Boom Town etc shorter style.

And then there was the Victorian Jack with sideburns and cape-like coat, liked that too.

Love the coat, although the one in series 1 - 3 was sort of heavy-looking and sometimes made JB look shorter and heavier than he is. For example the scene in Fragments when Jack stands in the doorway of Toshiko's UNIT prison cell, the coat really does not compliment him. Jack looks like he's about five feet tall (and there's nothing wrong about being five feet tall, I'm not that much taller meself, but Jack is SUPPOSED to be tall). So I was very happy about the news that Shawna Trpcic has re-designed the coat to be lighter and more slim-lined.

But I gotta confess, I so would like to see Jack wearing jeans, because we all know that John looks so yummy in jeans. And in a suit. And wearing nothing at all.

I like Jack in or out of his coat, love him in his dark royal blue shirt and sliver braces. That combination really brings out his marvelous baby blues.... Waist coat either way is good.

i second the Jack-in nothing look! That would be fabulous but rather disracting! Lol
That waist coat was hot. Also the aqua/greenish shirt for a splash of colour was nice. I don't particularly like blue, so I was not too impressed with Jack's uniform in S2.
The coat is fine, I'd hate to see it gone, but it's 2011 and I believe Jack can wear something else, especially in the LA weather. And you're right about the coat making Jack look short. It looks great when he's running though...
Did not like the Victorian look. Not a fan of the hair or sideburns, but loved the cape! Lol
And Jack's eyebrows scare me sometimes. I can't remember which episodes specifically, but I think season 2.
That said, I'd take Jack any way. As long as he's around for a long long long time!

Okay, time for my two cents...

I too, LOVE the coat, and the way Jack looks in it. I really have come to love the waistcoats, though, they are so very flattering on John. Also VERY fond of the deep blue shirt and silver braces, blue suits him. While I agree that what John's ass does for a pair of jeans is well, there aren't words, so we'll swerve that one. I think it may be too much of a character departure if he wears them more than once or twice, like for 'undercover recon' or something.

I completely agree that our American weather may be too warm to justify his greatcoat being as prevalent in Jack's Miracle Day wardrobe. However, I have two theories about the presence or absence of the greatcoat in MD. One, would we see him wearing greatcoat less or maybe not at all, because it's a painful reminder of Ianto? Then there's theory two, would he wear it more BECAUSE it reminds him of Ianto?

As for the hair? Light in color and long enough to grab a handful of is perfect!

love the *horny porcupine* description, snowebunny!

In my opinion, Capt. Jack looks amazing in just about anything...and spectacular in nothing *thank you, DW*

Love the blogs, Dana, keep 'em coming!

@Snowebunny - YES!! I loooooove waistcoat Jack! :) I know what you mean about the coat working against him at times, but I would never get rid of it completely. I love the new coat, it looks amazing! Jack in jeans would be so nice, it would be crazy who knows if we'll ever see it again. We agree though, he's look good in anything, or nothing at all...

@Time_Hound - I love what the blue does for Jack eyes and waistcoats are always good! They really do dress him well in general, it's merely an argument of which look we like the best, hard to choose :)

@Karyn - Yup! The coat is great, but it's also nice without the coat, Jack is just a looker. Thanks for the comment!

@Tammy - I am glad you are on my side on the greatness of Jack's wardrobe. As to your Ianto thought...Hmmmmm. I think that one of two things would be the case. 1) Jack would not be the type to be so sentimental about about an article of clothing, at least not enough to deter him from wearing it. of 2) He would be affected by it but he would purposely wear it anyway because he feels responsible for Ianto's death and feels like he deserves to suffer. Thanks for reading :)
